What Molecular Sieves Are Used in Petroleum Refining FCC Catalysts?
FCC (Fluid Catalytic Cracking) catalysts are a class of multifunctional catalytic materials used in petroleum refining processes to efficiently convert heavy hydrocarbons into high-value-added products such as gasoline, liquefied petroleum gas, and light olefins. They are typically composed of active components, matrix materials, binders, and fillers.
Types And Functions Of Molecular Sieves For FCC Catalysts
FCC catalysts possess high acidity, good hydrothermal stability, and strong anti-wear properties, enabling them to promote reactions such as cracking, isomerization, and hydrogen transfer of macromolecular hydrocarbons under high-temperature fluidization conditions. Furthermore, by adjusting the molecular sieve type, rare earth content, acidity, and pore structure, the yield and selectivity of target products such as gasoline, propylene, and LPG can be optimized.
Therefore, different molecular sieves in FCC catalysts primarily play complementary catalytic roles. Y-type molecular sieves and their modified forms are the core active components of FCC catalysts. Beta molecular sieve can be used to improve the cracking, isomerization, and product selectivity of specific hydrocarbons. As a functional additive, ZSM-5 can improve the yield of light olefins. And ZSM-11 molecular sieve is used for shape-selective cracking of hydrocarbons and the regulation of light olefins.
USY Molecular Sieve: Most Important Active Component
Y-type molecular sieve is the fundamental cracking-active component for FCC, and Ultrastable Y (USY) is the predominant cracking zeolite type. High-silica Y or Dealuminated Y (DAY) are both USY molecular sieves. USY can be understood as Y-type zeolite that has undergone stabilization treatments such as dealumination and hydrothermal treatment.
As FCC catalysts undergo repeated cycles of reaction and regeneration, they must withstand high temperatures and steam-rich environments. Consequently, USY exhibits high hydrothermal stability, strong resistance to steam deactivation, high framework stability, and excellent capability for cracking large molecules.
REY/RE-USY Molecular Sieve: Balances Activity, Coke And Stability
Rare-earth modified Y zeolites hold significant industrial value in FCC catalysts. The rare-earth elements involved include La, Ce, and Nd. Rare-earth ion exchange can improve the thermal stability, hydrothermal stability, acidity, activity, and coke selectivity of Y-type zeolite molecular sieves.
Therefore, the REY (Rare-Earth Y) and RE-USY (Rare-Earth Ultra-Stable Y) molecular sieves are typically employed in petroleum FCC, to enhance activity and stability, and to strike a balance among catalytic activity, coke yield, and gasoline/diesel selectivity.
Beta Molecular Sieve: Improves Specific Hydrocarbons Conversion
Beta is not the mainstream core molecular sieve in traditional FCC catalysts, unlike USY. But rather, it is more characteristic of specific formulations or functional modified zeolite molecular sieves.
Beta molecular sieve possesses the BEA topology and features a three-dimensional large-pore system. Its strong acidity and large pore channels enable its use in FCC applications for hydrocarbon cracking, isomerization, and hydrocracking-related reactions, as well as for improving middle-distillate selectivity and promoting the conversion of specific hydrocarbons.
ZSM-5 Molecular Sieve: Promotes Light Olefins Formation
The role of ZSM-5 molecular sieve in FCC processes is distinct, it functions as a FCC catalyst additive. While Y-type zeolite is primarily responsible for cracking large heavy-oil molecules, ZSM-5 focuses on the further conversion of gasoline-range hydrocarbons and promotes the production of light olefins.
ZSM-5 zeolite features an MFI framework with a microporous structure and exhibits pronounced shape-selective catalytic characteristics. Incorporating ZSM-5 into FCC systems typically increases the yields of propylene, ethylene, LPG, and light olefins, reduces gasoline or modulates the olefin composition of the gasoline. And the combination of USY and ZSM-5 molecular sieves is very typical FCC catalyst system.
ZSM-11 Molecular Sieve: Regulates Or Shape-selectively Cracking
ZSM-11 molecular sieve belongs to the MEL topology, a structure very similar to the MFI structure of ZSM-5. Its function in FCC processes such as shape-selective cracking and olefin regulation, also parallels that of ZSM-5 molecular sieve.
In FCC industrial practice, ZSM-11 molecular sieve can be utilized for hydrocarbon cracking, aromatization, and isomerization, or employed as an FCC catalyst additive. However, in terms of industrial-scale FCC application, ZSM-11 molecular sieve is far less significant than ZSM-5.
