What Are The Applications Of Zeolite Catalysts?

Zeolite catalysts demonstrate outstanding performance in acid catalysis, shape-selective catalysis, and oxidation catalysis, promoting the greening and efficiency of multiple industrial processes. Let's explore the specific applications of zeolite catalysts in different industries.

Characteristics Of Zeolites As Catalysts

  • Structural features: Zeolites are composed of TO4 tetrahedra, forming regular pores with pore diameters less than 1 nanometer. Their diverse topologies (e.g., FAU, MFI, etc.) provide unique pathways for catalytic reactions. For example, the FAU-structured Y-type zeolite molecular sieve, with its three-dimensional, twelve-membered ring pores, is suitable for macromolecular cracking and is a key material in petroleum refining.
  • Functional advantages: Zeolites have adjustable acidity, with their silica alumina ratio affecting acid strength, adapting to varying catalytic needs. And also have high thermal stability and can operate stably at high temperatures. Zeolites exhibit strong shape-selective catalytic properties. For example, the ten-membered ring pores of ZSM-5 zeolite precisely control the entry and exit of reactant molecules, improving product selectivity.

Zeolite Catalysts In Petroleum Refining

  • Y-type zeolite (FAU structure) molecular sieve is the core of FCC catalysts. Its three-dimensional twelve-membered ring channels are suitable for heavy oil cracking and offer high activity. Modification technologies such as rare earth ion exchange and dealuminized Ultra-Stable Y (USY) further enhance its stability and selectivity, and are widely used in FCC plants worldwide.
  • As a catalyst component, Y-type zeolite molecular sieves, with their high specific surface area and acidic sites, provide efficient catalytic sites for hydrocracking in heavy oil and residual oil processing. For example, in a heavy oil hydrocracking unit, Y-type zeolite molecular sieves can achieve a heavy oil conversion rate of over 80%, thereby increasing light oil yields.
  • ZSM-5 zeolite (MFI structure) molecular sieve is used as an additive for reducing olefins in FCC and increasing propylene production. Its ten-membered ring pores precisely control the reaction path. Adding 10% ZSM-5 can increase propylene yields to over 9%, significantly improving refinery economics and making it a valuable addition to modern FCC processes.

Zeolite Catalysts In Petroleum Chemical

  • Para-xylene synthesis: The shape-selective catalysis of ZSM-5 zeolite molecular sieves enables para-xylene selectivity exceeding 90%, as exemplified by Mobil's PxMaxSM process, which boasts high production efficiency. Combinations of mordenite and ZSM-5, such as the XyMaxTM dual-bed process, increase para-xylene yields and reduce energy consumption.
  • Ethylbenzene and cumene production: Replacing traditional liquid acid with ZSM-5 zeolite molecular sieve (gas phase process) and β zeolite molecular sieve (liquid phase process) are environmentally friendly and efficient. For example, the dilute ethylene-to-ethylbenzene production technology utilizes nano MFI molecular sieves, to drive industry upgrades.
  • Catalytic oxidation: As a catalyst, TS-1 titanium silicalite molecular sieve is used in the production of propylene oxide (HPPO). And in the production of caprolactam, TS-1 molecular sieve catalyzes the oximation of cyclohexanone, while Silicalite-1 molecular sieve catalyzes the Beckmann rearrangement.

Zeolite Catalysts In Fine Chemical

  • Pyridine base synthesis: Multistage pore zeolite molecular sieve catalysts improve mass transfer efficiency, lower reaction temperatures, and minimize side reactions, significantly enhancing product quality and yield.
  • Diethanolamine synthesis: ZSM-5 zeolite molecular sieves selectively restrict triethanolamine formation, improving product purity and selectivity, reducing energy and material consumption, which aligns with the green and efficient development trend of fine chemicals.
  • Hydroquinone synthesis: The TS-1/H2O2 one-step method (EniChem process) achieves a phenol conversion rate of 30% and a selectivity exceeding 90%, which eliminates the multiple reaction steps and large amounts of solvent used in traditional processes.

Zeolite Catalysts In Coal Chemical

  • Methanol to olefins (MTO): SAPO-34 zeolite (CHA structure, 0.4nm octahedral pores) molecular sieve is used in DMTO technology, S-MTO technology utilizes nano-sheet SAPO-34, promoting the development of the coal olefins industry.
  • Methanol to gasoline (MTG): ZSM-5 molecular sieve (Mobil technology) efficiently converts methanol into gasoline, achieving a conversion rate exceeding 90%. Its high gasoline selectivity provides important technical support for the production of coal-based liquid fuels.
  • Syngas to olefins: The oxide/SAPO-34 composite catalyst breaks through the selectivity limit of Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, achieving C2-C4 olefin production exceeding 80%, which opens up a new path for producing high-value-added products in the coal chemical industry.

Zeolite Catalysts In Environmental Chemical

  • NH3-SCR denitrification: Cu-SSZ-13 molecular sieve (CHA structure) replaces traditional catalysts, offering a wide temperature window and high hydrothermal stability. When applied to diesel exhaust treatment, it delivers high denitrification efficiency, addressing NOx pollution.
  • VOCs treatment: The MCM-41 molecular sieve adsorbent is used for volatile organic compound (VOC) treatment. Its macroporous structure and high specific surface area provide powerful adsorption capacity, enabling a VOC removal rate of over 90%, effectively reducing air pollution.
  • Water treatment: ZSM-5 molecular sieve is applied for heavy metal ion adsorption in wastewater. Its pore structure allows for the selective adsorption of specific ions (such as copper and lead etc.), providing a new approach for water pollution control.
