Introduction
Amorphous silica-alumina (ASA) is defined as a non-crystalline aluminosilicate material composed primarily of silica (SiO2) and alumina (Al2O3), serving as a heterogeneous catalyst support characterized by tunable medium-strength acidity and a lack of long-range atomic order. This material arises from the intimate mixing of silica and alumina phases, resulting in a solid acid with both Brønsted and Lewis acid sites that enable its use in catalytic processes. Unlike crystalline counterparts such as zeolites, ASA catalyst exhibits a disordered structure that provides high accessibility for reactants without diffusional limitations from micropores.
ASA catalyst is prepared by the sol-gel method, with silicon and aluminum compounded at the atomic scale and evenly distributed. As a high-end catalyst support, ASA catalyst features uniform acid centers, larger pore volume, large specific surface area, concentrated pore distribution, high purity, and adjustable Si/Al ratio.
ASA amorphous silica-alumina, is also known as Amorphous Silica-Alumina Xerogel, or simply ASA Xerogel. It typically appears as a white powder. The primary application of amorphous silica-alumina powder is as the FCC catalyst matrix, providing mesoporous structures, pre-cracking heavy oil, improving diffusion, and increasing gasoline yield. It also serves as hydrocracking catalyst carrier, loading Ni, W, Mo, etc. Additionally, ASA Xerogel can be used as isomerization catalyst, dehydration catalyst, and adsorbent.
