What Is The Green Synthesis Of Zeolite?

"Green" zeolite synthesis focus on using sustainable, environmentally friendly approaches to produce zeolites. Compared with traditional hydrothermal synthesis, the goals of green synthesis of zeolite generally include reducing energy consumption and costs, minimizing environmental pollution, and improving synthesis efficiency.

Disadvantages Of The Hydrothermal Synthesis Of Zeolite

  • Dependence on chemicals: Raw materials rely on high-energy chemicals such as sodium silicate and sodium aluminate, and the production process causes high carbon emissions and resource consumption.
  • Serious template pollution: The organic templates are costly, and the removal process releases harmful gases such as NOx, which increases the environmental burden and limits its sustainable development.
  • Low solvent efficiency: The hydrothermal synthesis consumes a large amount of water, has a low solid-solubility ratio, poor reaction efficiency, and a lot of waste liquid discharge, which increases the difficulty of post-processing and environmental pressure.
  • Prominent safety hazards: The high-pressure reaction conditions of hydrothermal synthesis have the risk of explosion, its requirements for equipment are strict and the operation is complicated, which restricts industrial promotion.

Green Raw Materials For Zeolite Synthesis: Natural Minerals As Substitutes

  • Application of kaolinite: Kaolinite can be transformed into metakaolin by calcination at temperatures ranging from 600℃ to 900°C, which improves the reaction activity and is the crucial step in the synthesis of zeolites such as 4A and Y types.
  • Applicaton of diatomite: Diatomite is rich in amorphous SiO2 with a high silicon-aluminum ratio, does not require activation, and its natural porous structure serves both as a raw material and a carrier, which can be used to synthesize zeolites of P and ZSM-5 types.

Green Conditions For Zeolite Synthesis: No Organic Templates

  • Direct gel manipulation: The composition of the gel needs to be precisely controlled. Deviations will easily lead to the formation of amorphous crystals or quartz phases, and the reaction window will be narrow.
  • Crystal directional fluid: The directional fluid provides structural units to induce the formation of target zeolites, shorten the induction period, and improve the crystallization rate and selectivity, thereby obtaining high-purity products.

Green Methods For Zeolite Synthesis: No Solvent Technology

  • Solid phase mixed grinding: Mix and grind solid raw materials such as silicon source, aluminum source, template, seed crystal, etc. to form a uniform reaction system without liquid phase participation.
  • Heating crystallization process: Heating in a closed system to induce solid phase reaction, with crystal water acting as the reaction medium to promote structural reorganization and crystallization.
  • These green methods above do not discharge waste liquid, are safe to operate, and have high single-batch yields, which are in line with the principles of green chemistry, very suitable for industrial promotion.

Current Constraints Of Zeolite Green Synthesis

  • Poor adaptability of green raw materials: The silicon-aluminum ratio of natural minerals is fixed, which limits the synthesis range and makes it difficult to meet the requirements of diversified zeolite structures.
  • Demanding process of green conditions: The direct gel manipulation method is subject to reaction window, and the crystal directional fluid method is complicated to operate. These synthesis processes of zeolite are both quite challenging.

Future Development of Zeolite Green Synthesis

  • Multi-technical coupling: Combine the no solvent technology with the crystal directional fluid method and natural mineral raw materials, to build an efficient green synthesis system and improve comprehensive performance.
  • Multi-mineral synergy: Use raw materials (such as kaolinite and diatomite, etc.) adaptively, to complement the silicon-aluminum ratios, expand the zeolite synthesis range, and improve the utilization rate of natural minerals.
  • Mechanism and model research: Establish a solid-phase reaction kinetic model to reveal the crystallization path, and provide theoretical support for process optimization and industrial scale-up.
