Introduction

Molybdenum trioxide (chemical formula MoO3), is the highest-valence oxide of molybdenum. It belongs to a layered orthorhombic crystal system, consisting of MoO6 octahedrons connected by shared edges and corners to form a two-dimensional planar structure, exhibiting anisotropic characteristics. α-MoO3 is its stable crystalline form, while β-MoO3 has poor thermal stability and easily transforms into α-MoO3.

Industrial-grade molybdenum trioxide is usually a white or light yellow powder, and at high purity, it is crystalline. It is slightly soluble in water but readily soluble in alkaline solutions such as ammonia, sodium hydroxide, and sodium carbonate, forming molybdates (such as sodium molybdate). It is also soluble in concentrated sulfuric acid and concentrated nitric acid.

MoO3 exhibits variable oxidation states (such as Mo6+, Mo5+, and Mo4+), strong redox capabilities, inherent acidity, robust metal-oxygen bonds, and a layered crystal structure. This enables it to be loaded onto carriers such as Al2O3, SiO2, TiO2, and molecular sieves, and it is easy to further sulfide, reduce, or form composite active phases with other metals. Therefore, molybdenum trioxide is often regarded as an important precursor for preparing Mo-based catalysts.

The primary value of molybdenum trioxide MoOin the field of catalysts lies in its use as an active component, a promoter, or a precursor, combined with elements such as Co, Ni, Al2O3, SiO2, and molecular sieves to form composite catalytic systems. Molybdenum-based catalysts are of great industrial importance, particularly in processes like hydrodesulfurization (HDS) and hydrodenitrogenation (HDN) within petroleum refining.
