Introduction
NH4-MOR zeolite catalyst or ammonium mordenite, is a molecular sieve material with MOR as its framework and NH4+ as its main exchangeable cation. It is typically prepared by ion exchange of alkali metal MOR, such as NA-MOR, with ammonium salt solution. NH4-MOR has a main channel consisting of 12-membered ring channels and pore sizes of approximately 6.5 × 7.0 Å, and also possesses an 8-membered ring side-bag structure.
NH4-MOR zeolite possesses tunable acidity and good shape-selective catalytic activity. Although NH4-MOR itself has high thermal and acid stability. NH4+ decomposes and releases NH3 during heating, readily converting to H-MOR. NH4+ can also be exchanged with metal ions such as Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+, and Zn2+, making it suitable as a precursor for metal-supported catalysts.
NH4-MOR zeolite is more often used as a catalyst precursor and functional material intermediate, rather than as a final catalyst. Examples include the preparation of H-MOR and metal ion exchange catalysts.
